How long before you receive your first rewards

To understand how the rewards distribution frequency work, its important to have some understanding of The Graph staking mechanics.

Indexers, like P2P Validator, "allocate" stake to certain subgraphs in order to create them, and in doing so they will receive staking rewards. Each subgraph has a different profitability. The more profitable a subgraph is, the more attractive it is for indexers to allocate their stake to it. However, if others have already allocated a lot of stake to this subgraph, the profitability becomes lower. Therefore, in order to maximise staking rewards, indexers have to carefully select which subgraph to allocate their stake to.

Staking rewards will be distributed to a delegators only when an indexer closes the allocation of their stake to a subgraph.

Warm up

You will start earning rewards as soon as you delegate. When your rewards are distributed they automatically compound into your delegation.

Rewards Distribution Frequency

Rewards used to be paid more consistently, however there have been many changes to The Graph recently. It went from having only 1 subgraph to 200+ subgraphs, and we expect more than 10k by the end of the year. Additionally, ETH gas fees have changed significantly with NFTs, from 15-40 gwei per transaction, to 90-150 gwei. These two factors in conjunction have made it more complicated to manage the allocations of our stake to different subgraphs. A few months ago we created software that makes calculations to take better decisions from the Indexer (P2P Validator) side and auto-reallocating, lets call it DecisionMakingTool (DMT).

That is why some days we close only a few allocations from 20+ open. Other days we close and open everything, and some others days we don't touch anything. We do this in order to maximise delegators rewards and to increase the security of our stake.

When we see that gas price are relatively low and we have some allocations open for quite long period of time, like 1-2 weeks, we close them manually if it doesn't have negative profitability to delegators. We do this so that delegators can receive their rewards more often.

We understand that this is a bit complex, therefore please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions.
